The Tapestry

Ideas are the threads which make up the tapestry of everything.

To be curious is to pull on loose threads.

To be creative is to take these threads and express them in new ways.

Loose threads imply that the tapestry is on some level incomplete, that not every idea fits together perfectly.

This may be in the mind of an individual, or in the collective knowledge of humanity as a whole.

On the scale of the individual, to pull on loose threads is to explore how unfamiliar ideas fit into adjacent ideas around it.

Until this exploration is complete, this unfamiliarity will inevitably generate personal inexpressibility.

Though it's in the nature of the tapestry for all ideas to be interconnected, some threads are more closely intertwined than others.

Adjacent ideas share a direct connection.

Rather than trying to grasp an unfamiliar idea without any source of reference, finding a familiar adjacent idea makes the unfamiliar idea far easier to grasp.

Knowledge is the comprehension of a single, stand-alone idea.

Understanding is the comprehension of how an idea fits into the context of adjacent ideas around it.

The greater the number of adjacent ideas you are familiar with, the greater your overall understanding of an idea.

However, this understanding is not completely infallible.

Memory is precarious.

After a while, as we ingest more ideas, our understanding threatens to contract rather than expand.

To resolve this, we must extend our memory beyond our mind.

This is the purpose of notes.

On the scale of humanity, to pull on loose threads is to cultivate discovery.

However, before such discoveries are fully explored, they will inevitably be shrouded by universal inexpressibility.

Inexpressibility is a semantic gap between an idea and the words to capture that idea.

To find those words, and to resolve inexpressibility, you must turn to language.

In the case of universal inexpressibility, the word will either be naturally produced through the cultural innovations of aligned communities, or it will be purposefully coined through the documented assignment of an individual.

How we perceive the tapestry is shaped by lenses.

How we express the tapestry is shaped by language.

They can range from all encompassing worldviews to highly focused cognitive frames of mind.
